DDT: Toxic Chemical or A Life-Saving Excellent Powder?

Donald Roberts and Richard Tren, authors of The Excellent Powder, discuss the scientific and political history of DDT as well as taking on the insane ban (or more appropriately, the effective ban) on DDT in much of the world. They blame much of the resurgence of malaria, especially in Africa, on its ban:

  1. What “insane ban?” DDT is banned from use on crops in the U.S., because DDT decimates ecosystems and domestic animals.

People who argue that DDT is a magic solution to malaria make the insane claims. Malaria deaths are at an all-time low, less than a third what they were at the height of DDT use, less than half what they were when the U.S. banned DDT use on crops. Every mosquito in the world now carries alleles that make it resistant or absolutely immune to DDT (because of irrational use of DDT early on). DDT can’t beat malaria, DDT can poison the environment.

No serious malaria-fighting organization on Earth asks for more DDT. DDT is in use in Africa, in carefully controlled situations, for Indoor Residual Spraying (IRS) only. Nothing but destruction could be accomplished from increasing the use of DDT now.

I thought it was banned because it causes cancer?
